Company Awards

Best Design Consultancy
The UK’s shrinking manufacturing base has led to more design work being carried out on a contractual basis. This award recognises design consultancies that use insight and expertise to generate intellectual property, and successful products, for clients.

Best Small Company
Past winners of this award have used innovative design to compete successfully with far larger rivals. The judges are looking for firms with fewer than 50 employees that have used clever design and innovative thinking to develop successful new products.

Product Awards
Product Design Innovation Award
Product design lies at the heart of the Innovation & Design Excellence Awards. This category recognises a commercially successful product that has been developed within a vibrant culture of innovation. The product may incorporate patented technology – and will have been developed by a committed design team.

New Product Award (‘Breakthrough Award’)
This new category recognises a product that is less than 12 months old – so is relatively unproven on the market. It could come from any size of company – from start-up to multinational – but must have been developed using innovative principles.

Environmental Innovation Award
Green legislation and consumer pressure are driving the development of more environmentally friendly products. This award recognises products that embrace environmental design principles – such as using lighter materials, boosting energy efficiency or being easier to disassemble.

Process Awards

Design Collaboration Award
Collaboration can take many forms: a lead customer directing a diversity of sub-contractors; a design consultancy carrying out wide-ranging work for a client; or a company that improves product development by finding external resources or technologies. These and other forms of collaboration are eligible to win this category.

Cycle Time Reduction Award
In product development, time is money. Being first to market can mean the difference between success and failure. Companies that can bring innovative products to market faster than its competitors – and more efficiently – enjoy greater profitability from new products. Re-designed products will be far cheaper than their predecessors.

Overall Award

Innovator of the Year Award
During their audit visit, iDEA judges consider a multitude of factors: use of new techniques; finding the ‘voice of the customer’; speed of product development; and much more. All these factors are taken into account when choosing an overall winner – a company that can prove it is firing on all cylinders regarding innovation.
